Made in Britain- Nissan Qashqai
by Lucy Penn
The automotive market in the UK is starting to stutter back into life. The UK industry received some much welcomed news today that Nissan will be moving its Qashqai production to the UK.
The next generation Nissan Qashqai will be designed, engineered and built in Britain. The production was agreed after a meeting took place between the president and chief executive officer of Nissan Motor Co, Carlos Ghosn and the Prime Minister David Cameron.
The Nissan Qashqai UK project represents a 192 million pound investment by Nissan. The announcement also means that 6,000 direct and indirect jobs will be safeguarded, which is much needed at this time. Currently, the Nissan Qashqai is the highest-volume car produced in the UK, seeing 80% export levels.
The development process will begin at Nissan's European Design Centre in Paddington based in London. The finished design will then be passed to engineers from the Nissan Technical Centre Europe in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. Finally, the new Nissan Qashqai will be built at the Sunderland manufacturing facility.
Making the announcement outside 10 Downing Street, Carlos Ghosn said, "The UK has been a cornerstone of Nissan manufacturing since 1986, with the Sunderland plant setting important benchmarks for quality and efficiency in Europe and around the world. It's the home of the Qashqai, one of Nissan's biggest product successes. And as Nissan's leadership in sustainable transportation grows, the plant will become one of the pillars of our zero-emission manufacturing."
Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This investment from Nissan is fantastic news and a great demonstration of the strength and vitality of the UK car industry. That future manufacturing and R&D has been secured is a tribute to the skill, expertise and hard work of Nissan's UK workforce."
In 2009 there were fears that 1,200 jobs would have to be axed at the Sunderland factory amid the economic crisis, now the Northumberland plant is thriving. The all-electric Nissan LEAF is also produced at the factory after the plant won contract in March 2010. They beat off competition from Nissan plants around the world to become the top EV producer and are expected to manufacturer around 50,000 electric LEAFs a year.
And there's more good news for the UKs car manufacturing industry as BMW have recently announced they will be investing 500 million in UK plants. The huge investment will fund the production of the next gen Mini and will protect over 5,000 jobs.
