Under Cabinet Lighting - Practical & Accentual

A practical way to brighten up any space is by using under cabinet lighting. Any dark or shadowed area lying beneath overhead cabinets or shelves can benefit from its illumination. Mainly used to brighten up kitchen countertops, under cabinet lighting has worked its way into offices, bars and workshops where extra light is required to focus on the task at hand. However, under cabinet lighting is more than just practical. It can also add elegance to a variety of areas where you want to draw attention. Be it a curio cabinet or bookshelf, under cabinet lighting is versatile and adds that extra touch of light to anything that deserves to be in its glow.
Once the need for under cabinet lighting is determined, a selection can be made from several fixture designs which are available for specific purposes and enhancements. Various kinds of bulbs are also available for use in these fixtures depending on the desired lighting effect.
Fluorescent bulbs are by far the most common for working areas. They emit a bright light, are long lasting and energy efficient. Halogen bulbs provide a softer, warmer light but emit a lot of heat. These last quite awhile also. Xenon bulbs are similar to halogen bulbs but last up to five times longer. LED bulbs are becoming more popular as they contain a similar light output as a fluorescent bulb yet they give a more directional light output. They are also more durable and damage-resistant than fluorescent. Natural spectrum lighting is gaining popularity as well due to its natural daylight effect.
The most common fixtures for providing extra light to kitchen countertops or work areas are the stand alone units. These are rectangular in shape and attach to the underside of high hung wall units like cabinets or bookshelves providing a direct light on the lower work surface. They can either be plugged into an existing outlet or can be hard-wired into the electrical grid.
Puck lighting units are thus called because they resemble a hockey puck in shape and size. Puck lights are mainly used to showcase items as their lighting ability is direct with a low illumination. They can be wired together to create different lighting effects such as triangular, linear or circular.
Track lighting is very versatile as the design allows for bulbs to be applied individually along the tracking so that they can be removed or added in order to create the desired ambiance. Because of their versatility, track lights can provide a bright, even light for needed high visibility or a low, mood-setting light.
